Myofunctional therapy is a specialized treatment that aims to improve the function and balance of the muscles of the face and mouth, particularly those related to breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
The therapy involves a series of exercises that are designed to strengthen and retrain the muscles of the face and mouth, with the ultimate goal of improving oral function and preventing or treating dental problems. The exercises are tailored to the individual needs of each patient, based on their specific condition and treatment goals.
One of the main goals of myofunctional therapy is to correct improper oral habits, such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and thumb sucking, which can lead to a variety of dental problems, including misaligned teeth and jaw development issues. By retraining the muscles of the face and mouth, myofunctional therapy can help to correct these habits and prevent future dental issues.
In addition to correcting oral habits, myofunctional therapy can also help to improve breathing and sleep quality in patients with sleep apnea or other breathing disorders. By strengthening the muscles of the airway and promoting proper breathing techniques, myofunctional therapy can reduce the severity of these conditions and improve overall health and wellbeing.
